Your Theory Test – What to Expect
Let’s Break It Down
The theory test is the first big milestone on your way to getting your driving licence. It’s designed to check that you understand the rules of the road and can spot hazards before they become problems. Here's what to expect, so you can go in feeling confident and prepared.
What to Bring
Make sure you bring:
-
Your UK photocard driving licence
-
If you have an old-style paper licence, bring a valid passport too
Arrive at least 30 minutes early to allow time for check-in. You’ll need to store any bags, phones, or personal items in a secure locker before the test.

The Test Centre Experience
Once you’re checked in, you’ll:
-
Confirm your ID and have your photo taken
-
Store your personal belongings
-
Be taken to a computer terminal in the test room
Test centre staff will guide you through the process and help you settle in calmly.
The Structure of the Theory Test
There are two parts to the theory test:
1. Multiple-Choice Questions
-
50 questions on road signs, driving rules, and everyday situations
-
You’ll need at least 43 correct answers to pass
-
You’ll have 57 minutes to complete this section
-
You can flag questions to review them later
2. Hazard Perception
-
14 video clips showing typical road scenarios
-
Click as soon as you spot a developing hazard
-
One clip will contain two hazards
-
You’ll need at least 44 out of 75 to pass
You can take short practice sessions before both parts begin
After the Test
You’ll receive your result before you leave the test centre.
If you pass:
-
You’ll get a pass certificate (you’ll need this to book your practical driving test)
If you don’t pass:
-
No problem—we’ll review what to focus on and help you prepare to retake it confidently
The theory test isn’t designed to trip you up—it’s there to make sure you understand how to stay safe and make smart decisions on the road. We can help you prepare before booking, and practise together so you feel ready on the day.
